PCIe Gen1–Gen5 Protocol Training (Theory Modules – Module 1 & Module 2)

This module provides a strong, structured foundation in PCI Express (PCIe) protocol, covering Gen1 to Gen5 in a clear, layer-by-layer manner. The focus is on building conceptual clarity, protocol confidence, and the ability to analyze real PCIe behavior during interviews and project discussions.

Learners start with PCIe architecture, topology, and evolution, understanding why PCIe replaced legacy buses and how modern systems are built using Root Complexes, Switches, and Endpoints. The course then dives deeply into the Transaction Layer, explaining TLP formats, routing rules, ordering mechanisms, attributes, virtual channels, flow control, and completion handling with step-by-step packet-level explanations.

The Data Link Layer is covered in detail, including ACK/NAK handling, replay buffer logic, sequence numbers, DLLPs, credit management, and error recovery, giving learners a clear picture of how PCIe ensures reliability and data integrity.

The Physical Layer (theory) explains encoding evolution (8b/10b → 128b/130b), link training, equalization (Gen3–Gen5), LTSSM states, power management, and functional synchronization concepts from a verification perspective, without requiring analog knowledge.

The theory module also covers PCIe discovery, enumeration, configuration space, capabilities (MSI/MSI-X, AER, Resizable BAR, VC, etc.), and error handling, enabling learners to confidently decode configuration flows and debug system-level issues.

By the end of the theory modules, learners can read the PCIe specification meaningfully, decode waveforms and logs, explain protocol behavior clearly, and differentiate Gen1–Gen5 features with confidence.
